Idea creep

Feature creep is the ongoing expansion or addition of new features in a product. This is when extra or unnecessary features creep into the system, beyond the initial goals. These features typically begin in the form of an idea. Now ideas travel down many paths (feedback, revelation, trends, etc). Based on the journey that ends in feature creep, I'd like to formally introduce idea creep.

Idea creep is when your brilliant idea begins to grow artificial arms and legs. Appendages uninvited and sometimes aggressively attached by those that would like to leverage, re-purpose, and exploit your idea. Just like feature creep, idea creep is when extra or unnecessary idea additions creep into the original idea, beyond the initial goals.

If this happens (or has happened) to you, please first be thankful that your idea was good enough to be desired by others. In fact, this is a consequence of the rules surrounding my recent Inception blog post.

Second, don't become territorial or worried that your ideas might meet the same fate. Please continue to share.

Third...just stay thankful. You had a great idea. You did a good job.

Feel free to add your thoughts to this post (or your ideas).
