When it is everyone's job, it is no one's job

I've heard this one before. When it comes to big projects, programs, or initiatives it is not uncommon to hear the statement that "This is everyone's job." The trouble with it being "everyone's job": it is truly no one's job.

Let's see if this sounds familiar. We all debate the program and/or initiative. We get very passionate about the ideas, objectives, and goals, and we critique the words we have used. We all brainstorm and add a plethora of colors on to the whiteboard. Then... the inevitable happens. We all get up and go back to our regular jobs. The jobs that we are individually held accountable for, the jobs that we were hired for in the first place. And this is OK because it was everyone's job to begin with. Well, guess what? It is not OK.

It is not OK because we repeat this same meeting, brainstorm, and debate process again and again. Here is where you come in. The next time you attend  the "everyone's job" project/initiative meeting, step up. Ask to be held accountable for something, anything to help the move it forward.

Eventually (inevitably), when the question comes, "Whose job in this?" - Take pride in answering, "Mine."
